On Tuesday 20 May, a group of promising Mathematics students attended a Talented Mathematics Students’ Day hosted at Sydney Technical High School. The event, inspired by a program originally developed by the Australian National University in Canberra, offered students a stimulating and fast-paced experience filled with mathematical problem-solving and teamwork.
Throughout the day, students rotated through a variety of engaging challenges designed to stretch their thinking and encourage collaboration. These included the Group Challenge, where teams tackled complex problems together. The Swiss Challenge, a crowd favourite, involved participants taking turns in identifying number patterns under time pressure. Another highlight was the Cross Number Puzzle, which tested students’ logical reasoning and communication skills.
The energy peaked during the Relay Activity, where students quite literally ran between stations to complete a sequence of maths problems. This was a perfect blend of mental and physical agility that kept spirits high and minds sharp.
‘These challenges not only provided an enjoyable and enriching experience, but also helped our students develop problem-solving strategies and collaborative skills that will serve them well as they tackle more advanced mathematics in their senior years.’ Mr Stavropoulos, Mathematics Subject Coordinator.
Congratulations to all participants for their enthusiasm, resilience and teamwork on the day.
