Student Spotlight – Rhema A

Ken Doherty, a professional snooker player, is quoted as saying, ‘The five S’s of sports training are: stamina, speed, strength, skill, and spirit; but the greatest of these is spirit.’ Rhema A in Year 10, displays each of these qualities, in abundance.

Rhema recently competed at the 2025 Australian Junior Athletics Championships in Perth (4-8 April), representing NSW against the fastest 16-year-old girls in the country. Over the course of the five-day national meet, Rhema competed against elite athletes in three track events and qualified for the 100m, 200m, and the 4 x 200m relay. She performed exceptionally throughout the championship, qualifying for the finals in both the 100m and 200m sprints. She secured Silver medals in both races – officially ranking her as the second-fastest 16-year-old girl in Australia for both sprint distances.

Her time of 11.55s in the 100m final was a new personal best, and she followed this up with a time of 23.56s in the 200m final. To put Rhema’s individual performances into perspective, Australia’s female athletes who competed at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games recorded 100m times of 11.26s and 11.29s, and 200m times of 22.89s and 23.36s, respectively, a truly remarkable benchmark for a 16-year-old junior athlete.

Rhema capped off her amazing Nationals campaign by teaming up with her NSW squad to win Gold in the 4 x 200m relay, seeing Rhema take home an incredible haul of one Gold and two Silver medals.

Mr Cocking, SGCS Strength and Conditioning Coach, said:

‘We are incredibly proud of Rhema – not just for her commitment to her athletic excellence, but for her dedication to her studies and the school community. We look forward to seeing what lies ahead in her bright future.’
