From Thursday 27 November to Saturday 29 November, 14 of our Year 10 students embarked on their Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Qualifying Expedition. The students hiked from Katoomba to Mount Solitary via the Golden Stairs and then returned to Katoomba via the Furber Stairs. It was a challenging route with steep ascents and descents, but the students showed great resilience, teamwork, and a positive attitude throughout.
Over the three days, the students carried full packs and camped overnight, safely navigating changing weather conditions (heat and wind) and challenging terrain. The group encouraged each other through some very tough sections of the track.
‘It was a fantastic opportunity for them to grow in confidence, independence, and leadership, and the students should be proud of what they achieved.’ – Mr Patrick Murray, Duke of Edinburgh Coordinator.
Two of our student participants share their reflections about the experience:
‘… One of my main takeaways from the trip was just how vast and beautiful the Blue Mountains are – we saw so much diversity of nature and could really appreciate God’s magnificent creation. We were even lucky enough to see fireflies at the campsite – a really awesome experience! Times around the campfire, playing games and solving riddles were some of my favourite moments. Throughout the trip, we bonded really well as a group, sharing in both the exciting and challenging aspects of the journey.’ Jacqui H.
‘… It was awesome to see how people reacted to the big but momentary struggles and on the other hand the peak moments on mountains (no pun intended) or eating s’mores by the fire. The third day took us through the outskirts of the remarkable views of the mountain ranges, allowing us to see parts of nature we’d never experienced…’ Parker P.
