It has been a busy time in the Infants Library this term. Infants students have been enjoying reading a range of quality literature during their library lessons, including shortlisted books for the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Awards, in the lead up to our Book Character Parade. To celebrate Book Week, we took a deeper dive into the illustrations of Cate James, an award winning illustrator and print maker. Cate has illustrated over 40 published picture books and we had the privilege of her visiting our School last week to share her talent and love for drawing with our students.
Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 classes each created the framework for a story by choosing two characters, selecting where they were from, and identifying an adventure they would embark on. Cate then led the students in drawing these fun characters. The students enthusiastically embraced this challenge and discovered that they too can illustrate a story! Kindergarten had sea lions travelling to the moon on roller skates, Year 1 dove into the deep sea with a koala from the city and Year 2 got creative with a rabbit and a kangaroo from the North Pole exploring the depths of the ocean.
The students were fascinated with the process of illustrating picture books and Cate James’ books are likely to be in high demand for borrowing for many weeks to come.
