Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Hike

On 20 and 21 June, forty Year 9 students embarked on their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh hike in the Heathcote National Park. The Duke of Edinburgh program aims to equip young people with essential life skills, building their confidence and encouraging personal growth. Congratulations to each student who took part in the hike, overcoming challenges and learning new skills, whilst enjoying the beauty of nature.

Two of our students described some highlights of the hike:

‘Duke of Ed was one of the most rewarding and memorable experiences of this year. We hiked for two days in cold weather with heavy backpacks through the bush with a map and compass to navigate on uneven terrain. On day one, we arrived with our backpacks, pumped and excited for the journey ahead as we split off into our walking groups to start the hike. Each person took a turn at navigating on suburban roads, fire trails and bush tracks that eventually led us to camp after a whole day of hiking. Camp was challenging as we tried to correctly set up our tent and cook an edible dinner on a stove, however these experiences helped me grow in resilience and teamwork… We were able to enjoy the incredible natural waterfalls and lakes that were unreal to see. As we pushed through the final kilometres of the hike, this experience pushed me out of my comfort zone and taught me lifelong skills of perseverance and independence, reminding me that I am capable of overcoming challenges I once thought were impossible.’  (Georgia T)

‘While hiking, we had to make a lot of decisions, like when to stop and rest, which was really fun and helped grow our decision-making skills. Camping was so much fun, and eating dinner all together and sitting around the fire was a nice end to the day. The second day was similar to the first, except that we took a different route back to the train station. It was a great fun traveling in my group and getting to see amazing places as I walked. It was an incredible experience and I’m really thankful to Mr Murray and the school for a great experience and I can’t wait to do it again.’ (Stanley C)
