This year’s Evening of Fine Music at Horizon Church marked the beginning of SGCS’s third decade of celebrating the gift of music through the extraordinary performances students in Year 3 to Year 12 as soloists or members of an ensemble, band or choir. The evening was the fruit of seeds planted by our dedicated Music staff and tutors and, of course, the rich creativity of around 180 students, supported and nurtured by their families.
The Stage Band opened the evening with a powerful performance of TANK and No Moon At All, followed by extraordinary solo, duet and ensemble performances in oboe, voice, violin, clarinet, saxophone, drums, piano and flute. The program was rich with the diversity of music and each performance moved and inspired the audience in unique ways. Our Year 12 students gave masterful performances on their chosen musical instrument. Now in their final year of schooling, Evening of Fine Music is a fitting occasion to celebrate their accomplishments as they perform one last time for SGCS. The Junior School Choir took us to interval with two lovely pieces, All Things Bright and Beautiful and Annie.
Following interval, the Concert Band showcased the talents of students across the year groups, from Year 3 to Year 12, and highlighted how the polished performances of the more mature students were balanced and enhanced by the energy and enthusiasm of the younger students. A lively performance of Walking On Sunshine, accompanied by the Stage Band, provided an exciting preview of the School’s upcoming musical, Back to the 80s. The Senior Choir sang the much-loved hymn, Abide With Me, unaccompanied by instruments, providing a particularly moving and captivating performance.
The Combined Choirs, a striking gathering of students from all year groups and staff members, closed the evening with a heartfelt rendition of Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World. The audience were left with a lingering sense of hope, wonder and gratitude, and a deep appreciation for the wonderful gift God bestows on us through music.
Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth! Psalm 100:1 (ESV)
