Year 12 Ancient History students were booked to travel to Italy in April and visit Pompeii and Herculaneum; two ancient cities buried in the ash from Mount Vesuvius which erupted in A.D. 79. The two cities are now open to the public and are both active archeological sites.
World renowned Archaeologist, Dr Estelle Lazer was to give SGCS students a guided tour of both archaeological sites. Unfortunately, the trip was cancelled due to COVID-19.
Thankfully, Dr Lazer very graciously offered her time to give students a presentation on the impacts of the eruption on Pompeii and Herculaneum and the changing technologies used by archaeologists to excavate this significant historical site. It was a tremendous privilege to have Dr Estelle Lazer in our classroom via Zoom. Her presentation gave students unique insight into past research and also research that is yet to be published. This was an invaluable opportunity for Year 12 as they approach their HSC examinations.
