On Thursday 17 March, the Zone Swimming Carnival was held at Prairiewood Leisure Centre. Many great swimmers from SGCS participated in the carnival including Landon Aitken-Ling, Daniel Beyner, Emily Boznovska, Lucy Cartwright, Keasi Diloi, Kobe Fay, Anna Gibson, Adam Lo, Aiden Mitchell, Neave Neilson, Alexander Paras, Keira Neilson, Danica Zhang and Lucas Zhang.
At the Zone Carnival there were a variety of sprints and long-distance races. One of our most challenging events was the 200m medley where Aiden Mitchell, Anna Gibson, Alexander Paras, Keira Neilson, Lucy Cartwright and Neave Neilson, competed. Keira Neilson did exceptionally well, placing and progressing for this event.
A major highlight of the day were the Boys’ and Girls’ Team relays. Our Boy’s Relay Team made it through to State for the medley and our Girl’s Relay Team came 2nd in the 4x50m freestyle relay and the 4x50m medley relay. A great effort considering we do not have as many swimmers as many of other schools.
Many of our students posted personal bests (pbs). Some honorable mentions go to:
- Emily Boznovska for achieving a huge pbs in her 100m freestyle, 50m butterfly and 50m breaststroke; Alexander Paras for receiving a pb in his 50 breaststroke and progressing to State (even with an injured hip!);
- Kobe Fay for achieving a pbs in his 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle and 50m breaststroke by 2 seconds and over; and
- Keira Neilson raced particularly well, progressing through to State for 7 events and placing 1st in 50m breaststroke.
Overall, a very successful day for SGCS. We would like to extend our congratulations to our athletes and our gratitude to the assisting staff. Our best wishes to all our qualifying swimmers for the upcoming State Championships.
