The Scoop on STEM

The Gelato Project, which was launched in 2019, has returned for 2021. The Year 6 design challenge forms part of a Science unit titled, Working Scientifically, Design and Production. As part of the project students are required to create their own flavour of gelato.

Recently our Year 6 students designed various flavours of ice-cream and gelato using the Design Thinking Process. The five stages of Design Thinking, according to the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford (, are Empathise, Design, Ideate, Prototype and Test.

The Gelato Project introduces Year 6 to scientific principles and encourages scientific thinking. This includes taking an ordered and logical approach to problem solving and scientific designs, which prepares students for fair testing and the scientific method.

In previous years, the students visited the company Pure Gelato to learn more about gelato making and be inspired for their own future creations. However, this year due to COVID restrictions, Mr Alfredo La Cava, Director of Pure Gelato kindly conducted an engaging Zoom meeting with the students instead. Our students were very inspired and came up with new flavours like: dragon fruit and mango iced tea sorbet; gummie bear ice cream; banana berry smoothie; and donut and cookie dough. The students will eventually present their new flavours to Mr La Cava for assessment.

This very cool project will continue through Term 2.
