Year 11 Physics students have been learning about the characteristics of waves and how they transfer energy. Their Science Teacher, Mrs Michelle Blight, took a rather novel yet sweet approach to demonstrating this concept. Together, the students built a gummy bear wave machine to demonstrate how the particles vibrate and pass the energy from one to the next without the particles moving along the wave.
Mrs Michelle Blight said:
We have a lot of fun together as we study Physics. Through this very visual and sensory experiment, we were able to demonstrate transverse waves, torsional waves and identify crests and troughs as well as notice the relationship between frequency, speed, and wavelength.
The students will continue their studies in wave behaviour such as reflection, refraction, interference, and harmonics as they learn about sound and light over the coming weeks and into next term.
