Monstrous Fun with Mini-Beasts

Not many of us enjoy the experience of insects close hand, but our Year 1 students relished their recent opportunity to become personally acquainted with a range of six-wheelers.

The Mini-Beasts incursion offers students the extraordinary experience of examining and, in some cases holding, a range of spiders, cockroaches, centipedes, millipedes, moths and butterflies as well as cocoons, shells and nests. Reactions ranged from squeals of delight to quiet contemplation as students held real-life insects in their hands and watched some, like the stick insect, crawl up their arm.

During Question Time, students learnt how to handle insects, what to do if you discover a mini-beast in your own garden and the importance of leaf litter. The incursion compliments the unit of work Year 1 students undertake on “mini-beasts and mini-worlds”.
