On Thursday 2 June, the U15 Boys and Open Boys participated at the CSSA Sydney South Metropolitan soccer Gala Day tournament at Gannon’s Park, Peakhurst.
After a slow start to the day, the Open Boys Team won their second match and finished second in their Pool to make the Semi Finals on the back of brave goalkeeping performances from Tyron Valenti and Alexander Thompson and a cracking goal from outside the box from Troy Valcas.
In the Semi Finals, the team came up against a strong Shire Christian School team who had finished first in their pool. Unfortunately, we bowed out of the competition.
The U15 Boys Team begun their day confidently beating last year’s winner Inaburra in their first match. A strong defensive effort at the back and a great solo effort from Israel Adelaja, scored the winning goal.
With control of the midfield and the use of pace and skill on the wings, the team went on to also win the remaining 2 matches to finish top of their pool. In the semi-finals, they also faced Shire Christian School and although gained an early 1-0 lead, in the second half, through unfortunate circumstances, they found themselves down 2-1. They fought on bravely, creating enough chances to take the match back, but disappointingly for them, were not able to seal the win.
The whole squad can be extremely proud of their performances as they came together well as a team, all playing their part throughout the day. With several young quality players coming through, the future of soccer at SGCS is looking bright!
A special thanks to the parents that were able to make it out to support the boys. It’s great to be able to compete in front of a supportive crowd again after so long!
