The Hmong ethnic group is originally thought to have originated from China. Despite being a displaced people, they have a strong textile tradition reflecting the richness of their culture.
Year 10 Textiles students are presently learning about the connection between community and textiles and how storytelling can be incorporated into dress and furnishings.
Our students are drawing inspiration through the study of Hmong motifs, patterns, embroidery and quilting to create their own designs. Synthetic dyes create a contrast to the eco-dying that utilises avocado, coffee and tea. Once the fabrics have been completed the students will make pillowcases from their own designs.
