Challenged To Make It Work

The RoboCup Junior NSW Workshop days are open to all primary and secondary School across New South Wales. The workshop days offer an opportunity for students to prepare for the State competition.

Due to the current lockdown the Workshop Days have been unable to run face-to-face. The ever-resourceful Mrs Karen Binns, SGCS IT Teacher and Integrator took the news in her stride and set about working on a solution.

The July Workshop did eventually go ahead online via Zoom with break out rooms featuring a range of short workshops. This was attended by students and teachers from 17 schools with very positive feedback.

SGCS students have been working at home on their robots, code and journals and via lunchtime Zoom meetings with Mrs Binns.

The students then collaborated online and send their code to each other and test the code on the team robot. They watch the results on Zoom and the redesign and improve either the robot build or code. Sometimes even both.

Mrs Binns, said:

Our students are developing important team building skills, like building trust and respect for the opinions and ideas of others. It also demonstrated to them resilience in the face of difficulties, and the possibilities of working from home.
